Kid injuries. Because kids. They get hurt. ALOT.

So, kids tend to hurt themselves. No matter what you do or say, it’s gonna happen. Because they are kids and they are curious and they know no boundaries. “Look mom!” Splat. WAAAH!

I’ve been lucky that my two have not had any major injuries. (Knock on wood!!) But here are a couple of our stories.

My 6 yr. old….

He was I think 4 when this happened, we were planning on having a yard sale so I decided we should quickly clean out the garage, the Friday before…(I know, nuts). So after I get kids from school, I start pulling EVERYTHING out of garage so we can see what we have to sell, then we can organize. Well….doesn’t the sky start getting dark once all the things are out in the yard and driveway! Ug.

KIDS!! Help me throw everything back in the garage! No rhyme or reason, just get it in! So, kids are helping with what they can. Stuff all over the floor, of course. The boy goes to take something in, kicks something, then starts SCREAMING! Oh. No.I grab him and sit him on the porch, he has flip flops on and the blood! Oh the blood!! Turns out, he kicked the metal dust pan, sliced his big toe open and I’m freaking out. He’s screaming. Hubs is still at work….. I grab a paper towel and tell him hold that on it. I speed launch into just throwing everything into the garage. I leave out what I don’t care to get wet if it rains. I’m soaked in sweat by now, grab him, tell my daughter get in car. Decide to take him to med express. Daughter calling hubs on the way. No answer. No answer. Leave message. He’s moaning it hurts, it hurts. I’m like I know buddy! I know! Get there, of course have to wait. I don’t know how bad it is, wondering stitches. Hubs gets there. Wait some more.

Finally go back to a room, doctor looks at it. Decides to try to glue skin flap (gross!) back on….OH. MY. GOD. I have never heard my child scream or seen him thrash like he did that day. It took 3 or 4 of us to hold him down. I’m crying, he’s crying. Please stop, please stop. Oh my poor boy. My mom heart! Daughter is covering her ears. Finally, done…..bandage him up.

Next day, yes we still had yard sale, he’s running around, bandage falls off. Skin just barely hanging on…EW!! Gross!  Sorry. TMI. So, pull it off…Ew! Gross! More TMI! Anyway, thankfully the hubs has experience in lubing up cuts with neosporin and bandaging them up and his toe healed and survived and lived happily ever after. Still gives me the heebie jeebies.

My 10 yr. old…..

Fast forward to this past weekend, Saturday before Easter. My 10 yr. old was taking the garbage out to the garage. (I think our garage is evil). She comes running or skipping (who knows) back in and trips on wooden steps leading into kitchen, Boom. She’s down. Crying, screaming, I can’t breath! I can’t breath! (She’s a drama queen, FYI). But I know she landed pretty hard. So, trying to calm her and get her to breathe. Get her up, limps to couch. She gets over it once she realizes we’re going to egg hunt soon.

Blah Blah Blah….egg hunt, play at playground, run errands, eat dinner. She wants to go out and ride bike. Rides for like a minute. She says her leg hurts, (this is like 5 hours later), TOTALLY forget she hit her shin. I said let’s look, but I can see through her sweatpants already that it is swollen!! Pulls her pant leg up, Oh My Mother! It literally looked like a goose egg. A goose egg under her skin! In my head I’m like Oh no! Oh no! She broke her shin and played on it all day!!

So, I calmly said we might have to get it looked at, let’s go in and rest it. I can see the fear in her eyes now. (I’m sorry child!) Hubs says “Nah, It’s fine”. He is just too calm sometimes! Anyway, I google it and it does say shin injuries easily swell up. Ice, elevate and rest. So, we do that and within a half hour the swelling went all the way down.

That was Saturday, today is Thursday and it’s still bruised. But we keep resting and icing and she has survived. Again my momma heart!!! I know not a major injury, but Oy in the moment!!

They of course get the typical cuts, bumps and bruises from falling, playing, riding bike, etc. Because no matter how much you try, they will still get hurt because they are kids and they are dumb and don’t listen to mom because mommin ain’t easy

Those are the injuries that really stick out in my memory. We have been very lucky that we haven’t had any broken bones or anything too major. So far….. (I’m gonna be pissed if I just jinxed it!!)

How about your kiddos? Do you have any injuries, big or small, that you can’t believe happened to your kids? Are you calm or do you freak out? Share your stories in comments.

Until next time….

I totally relate to the mommas heart can’t handle injuries!! Trying to stay calm so they stay calm deserves an oscar sometimes right?!?
I have one prone to accidents. She’s 9 and has had a broke arm and a broken hand. Makes me feel terrible because her arm happened when she was just 1 year old and I didn’t get it looked at for 2 days!!!! She seemed fine after she fell but then we noticed here and there she wasn’t using it as much thought better safe to get checked and yepp full arm cast 😐 Her hand happened at school and she stayed in school rest of day!! Till she got home it was swollen and black and blue we took her right to ER.!!! Kids

Ha! And the Oscar goes to….
I think we try to brush some injuries off so we don’t seem like we’re overreacting. Then when it turns out it’s major….oy. mom guilt!

We have SO MANY injuries in my family on a daily basis between all three kiddos. And what people say is totally right, when my firstborn would get hurt we would run to the DR and emergency room at the drop off a hat and now with my third, we are like “you’re fine, you’re fine”. LOL. One time, my daughter fell trying to climb up a slide and I thought she was being dramatic so I told her to be tough and that she is fine and then a week later it was still hurting her and turned out she had broken her wrist. Yep…mother of the year right here…LOL

It’s crazy how they hurt themselves. That is funny the difference between 1st born & the rest. It’s tough to know how serious the injury is when they freak out about a papercut. You just never know momma!

Oh my! I can only imagine the pain to your mama heart in each instance. My little guy is almost 3 now and I’m so not looking forward to our first trip to the ER. Thanks for sharing mama!

Our momma hearts must be super strong! My best advice, try to be calm. Not easy. I’m a panicker! The hubs is the calm one. Thanks for reading. 😊
